How to make your own hand painted fabric!

Here is my handpainted mini fabric line!
If you have never tried your hand at painting fabric, please do, it's fun and rewarding. Now the next challenge will be to create a small quilt with it.

I'll keep you posted!

How did I do this, well I started off with Prepared for Dyer's fabric known as PFD which you can get at your local quilt shop.

Next you wet your fabric, I put my fabric into the jug, you can use a basin or plastic tub.

Once your fabric is completely wet, squeeze out the excess water and lay it flat on an old towel (fold the towel in four, so you have 4 layers)
Mix your paint (I used Pebeo Setacolour transparent and opaque. Mix you paint with water and start brushing away.

Once you have your fabric painted, cover your ironing board with an old towel

place your piece face down, and with a hot iron (cotton setting) press piece until it's dry. Place your painted fabric back on your painter's towel and paint a variety of rubber or wood block stamps and stamp your fabric with an all over pattern.

Return to the ironing board and place your piece face down and press from the back. Press until the paint is completely dry! Viola, your piece is heat set and ready to quilt with!

Bernina Stitch Regulator

As you know from my previous posts, I have had the opportunity to use a Bernina 550 Quilter's Edition.
For the last 2 days I have been using the Bernina Stitch Regulator. As a machine quilter and teacher this was an opportunity I couldn't refuse.

While I am qulting away using the Bernina Stitch Regulator I was thinking about my Dad. He was a wonderful wood worker and cabinet maker. I remember him saying to my one day, it's important to learn how to use the hand tools first and become proficient in them. Once you understand how these tools respond when using them, you then can appreciate the power tools and what they have to offer.

As I use this Bernina Stitch Regulator I realized humbly that he was right. I 've been machine quilting without a stitch regulator since 1990. It has taken alot of practice to learn the art (yes the art) of machine quilting. Making sure that you regulate your stitches so they are not what I called "Morse Code", you know the ones, dash, dash, dot, dash, dot!
I enjoyed using the Bernina Stitch Regulator, although it took some time to get use to. For those quilters who want to do free motion quilting, but do not want to practice, practice, practice, this is what you need! It gives you the opportunity to do free motion quilting without having to do all the work.

I have alot of freinds who are beautiful machine quilters, not a stitch regulator in sight! I know that they might disagree with me, but I'm not sure they have had the same opportunity granted me.

I now appreciate the stitch regulator and what it has to offer the home sewer/quilter. You will still need to take machine quilting classes to learn other machine quilting skills, but regulating you stitches will not be one of them!

I will always be learning new designs, but what a treat it was to use the stitch regulator. Thank you Pam and Judy at A Great Notion for this wonderful opportunity!

Bernina 550 - little project using the Bernina 550 - My scrapy table topper

It's hard to believe, but I did make this small scrappy table topper using leftovers from my stash, you know the ones, left over scraps of binding, fabrics to large to throw out and thread spools that were almost empty and scraps of batting to boot! I used the Bernina 550 and it does do a wonderful stitch. I used the decorative stitches and left over thread to emblish the blocks. It has a wonderful array of decorative stitiches, and the stitching is nice.

Since I have the machine for another week, I thought I would use the Bernina Stitch Regulator. I will let you know how it goes. Until then, here is a picture of my little 2012 Bernina 550 scrappy table topper!

Well, I have been sewing with the Bernina 550 and boy it has a beautiful stitch! This machine has a needle up/down button, so you can keep the needle in a down position while pivoting during the applique process and when you stop during the machine quilting process.

One thing I miss though is the scissor cutter. If you haven't had it then you won't miss it but I have, it on my own machine and it's something you can't do without once you have it.

It has a wonderful selection of decorative stitches, so if you are a seamstress, it has a wonderful selection to choose from to make your outfits one of a kind. It also does a wonderful buttonhole, as it stitches both side of the buttonhole from back to front.

This machine also comes with the Bernina Stitch Regulator, so if you want always wanted to machine quilt but find it so intimidating, this
is great for the beginner as it will give you perfect machine quilting right from the start.

As a quilter I would prefer a longer arm and a larger table as a I machine quilt large quilts.

It's user friendly, it has a beautiful stitch and as I mentioned it's great to take to classes, retreats and workshops.

So I give this a thumbs up!

Bernina 550 Quilter's Edition Sewing machine!

I have been given a wonderful opportunity to work on the new Bernina 550 Quilter's Edition Sewing machine here in the studio for a few weeks and thought that I would blog about my experience!

First thing I liked about the Bernina, was their website. They have a wonderful informative section that shows you how to use the machine. By selecting the model, they offer a variety of videos to show you how to use the machine.

Please keep in mind, when you purchase a new machine whatever the make or model, make sure that the dealer offers support. If the offer lessons, take them!

One the most important points I can make is that should you decide to purchase your machine from the states, then the servicing, warranty and support will only be done by the shop you purchased your machine. You cannot take your machine that you purchased in Bellingham, USA to your local Bernina dealer in Vancouver, Canada and expect warranty, classes or support. The machines have the service, warranty and support built into the price of the machine. So keep this in mind at all times.

In my own personal experience, price should never be the only consideration taken when purchasing a machine.

Okay, now let's get started!

Now I have taken the machine out of the box and I'm now setting it up.

1. It's a great size for taking to classes. Not to big.
2. It has an easy slide on extension table.
3. The harp is small so the length of the arm is short 7 1/2" from the centre of the needle. My Elna 7200 Pro is 9 inches.
4. It has a free arm, which is great for the sewer as well as the quilter
5. It comes with a walking foot with interchangeable soles - one for general sewing, quilting sole and an edge stitching and in the ditch sole. It also comes with a seam guide

Resolution Tips for the Quilter/Sewer

Resolutions tips for the Quilter/Sewer 2012

Have your machine cleaned and serviced
Remember to change your sewing machine needle(s) after every project. Needles can become dull and can snag fabric. New needles stitch crisp stitches. I recommend changing your needle(s) after 8 to 10 hours of sewing.
To take advantage of limited sewing time, keep together all the supplies that you are using for each project - Michael's have scrapbooking plastic containers that a great to use so you can quickly get back to where you left off.
Be sure to test sew even if you are doing something you have done before. If you forget to change certain settings on your machine, you will find the problem before you start on your actual project. Save yourself from ruining good pieces of fabric!
When you finish a project cut your leftover scraps into 5" squares, 10" squares, or 2 1/2" strips. Store them together with like size scraps, and on a rainy day pull them out and make a scrappy quilt.
Slim down the stash - Go through those stacks of fabric, any pieces you no longer want, and try donating them to a local sewing guild, quilting guild, school or church group.
When sewing for yourself and those you love, remember to sew at least one gift per year for someone you've never met

What goes great with our Snowman theme you ask?
                               How about our favourite recipe
          Mint Snowballs!

1/2 cup of icing sugar

1/2 cup of butter

1/2 cup of shortening

1/2 tsp of peppermint extract

2 cups of all purpose flour

1/2 tsp salt

1 container of store purchase icing

Coconut

Cream the sugar, butter, shortening and peppermint extract thoroughly.

Measure flour onto a square of wax paper, add salt, stir well to blend.

Add blended dry ingredients to creamed mixture, mix well. Shape into 1" balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 - 10 mins. Cool on cookie rack.

Dip tops into thing icing, then into the coconut. Makes 4 dozen. You can add food colouring to the icing for a more festive look!

Snowman Candle Mat

Material List

2 - 8" background squares

1 - 9" square of batting

5 - 5" squares of white fabric

1 - 3" square of each of the following

felted wool scraps - green, red, orange, yellow and blue - for scarves

Scraps of orange felted wool for noses

DMC Embroidery floss - to match scarves, white

10 small black seed beads for eyes

Double sided fusible web

Tailors Chalk

Metallic Thread

Metallica Machine Needle

Hand embroidery needles

Embroidery Scissors

Free Motion or Dual feed foot

6" sandwich plate

Step 1

Place the 6" sandwich plate face down onto the right side of one - 8" fabric square. Trace around the place with the tailors chalk. Sandwich the batting between the two 8" squares, making sure the drawn circle side is facing up. Using a metallic needle, metallic thread and a free motion foot, machine quilt the 8" squares using a meandering pattern.

Step 2

Trace the applique patterns shown on to double sided fusible web. Press to the wrong side of fabric (note: applique's are already in reverse). Cut out. Make the following:

5 snowmen from white fabric
5 scarves - one from each colour of felted wool
5 noses - orange felted wool

Step 3
Stitch into place the black beads for the eyes on the snowman
Using 2 strands of DMC floss, make 3 french knots for the buttons on the snowman

Step 4
Arrange the snowman around the edge of the marked circle, making sure they are close to each other. Press into place.

Step 5
Using a sharp pair of embroidery scissors, cut around the outside of the snowman. Using 2 strands of DMC Embroidery floss and blanket stitch, stitch around the entire snowmen.

Step 6
Press the scarves and noses into place. With 1 strand of embroidery floss, blanket stitch around the scarves.

Stitch the noses with 1 stand of embroidery floss and 2 french knots!

Here I go again, playing in the studio! Have you collected items through the years and thought, hmmm... I should use these. Well here I am in the same position and decided to take a day of playing before going out for our family Easter get together. So far I'm using inks, a paint brush and water on PFD (prepard for dying fabric). I painted my coneflowers, heat set them and starting to add wool and beads!

I have now added a border and a 3 dimensional wool delphenium, though I might change the shape. The border is painted as well and then I'll add the binding!

Playtime in the Studio

What's fun with Playtime in the Studio, it gives me time to play with all the items I have collected over the years such as paint, inks, wool, beads to name a few. Here I have painted the fabric, using a spray bottle filled with water and a wide brush to get the fabric background.

I then took my fabric and sharpy markers to mark grass lines from the bottom of the fabric. Now I'm adding embroidery stitches to give it another dimension.

Here is another one, this time I added beads, embroidery, fabric and wool circles.

I have had a few oops! moments but, the more I do the more fun I'm having. So get together with some of your friends and have a "Playtime in your Studio"!

Please don't use a hand held devise while driving

I haven't posted for the last week as we have been in the hospital with our nephew while he fights for his life. On Monday he was hit by a driver who was texting. My nephew was on his motorcycle going through a green light when the other driver went through the red light and hit him. These new rules of not talking on your cell phone while driving was bad enough, but texting is even worse as it takes your eyes of the road completely. Please remind people that nothing, I mean nothing is more important on your cell that can't wait till you pull over safely then, answer your text.

Please spread the word and just put yourself in our shoes as we sit by his bedside, praying he will pull through!

Northcott has been contacted by several interested and concerned quilters asking if we would be able to assist in getting quilts to the earthquake/tsunami victims in Japan. The answer is YES. At this point, we have agreed to collect quilts until end April. We will then ship them to Japan, to the editor of Patchwork Quilt Tsushin Magazine.

The quilts should be NEW, and anything from crib to twin/double is acceptable, though twin is preferred. Due to the difficulty in shipping quilts across the US border, we are asking that only quilts from Canadian addresses be shipped to Northcott. Kindly ship the quilts to:

Hello everyone, please find an note from Japanese Quilt Magizine with more information on quilt requirements.

Massive earthquakes occurred in Tohoku and Kanto areas in Japan on March 11.
We’ve been deeply troubled by the overwhelming damage in these areas.

We’d like to do something for the disaster victims and concluded that the best thing we, quilters can do is to make quilts for them because quilts comfort people by their softness and colors as well as being useful for warming.　In such devastated situations, it would be wonderful to have a soft, cuddly quilt.

We’d appreciate your help to support the sufferers who lost their family, home or everything.

Here is the guideline to make quilts for them

size: 1m x 1.2m
There are no rules about the design, techniques and material for the top.
For the backing, please use soft flannel or double gauze. You may find these as material for babies.
If you tie your quilt, please use only thread, without buttons nor beads, etc. to avoid babies’ accidentally swallow.
Please avoid plastic basting fasteners for basting and invisible thread for quilting
If you include your message, please write it on a 15cm x 10cm piece of white fabric and sew it on the back side of your quilt.

Quilts don’t have to be new. Quilts you made before are welcome if they are clean, without torn, blot, etc. When you send your quilt at hand, you don’t need to follow the above guideline.

We’d appreciate your sharing this project with your quilting friends.

As I watch the news, I'm horrified with what has and is happening in Japan and feel helpless. I received an email from EQ who asked if we could share this information with our quilting community to see if we can help in some small way. Naomi Naomi Ichikawa, is the Editor of Patchwork Quilt tsushin Patchwork Tsushin Co.,Ltd has asked if we could send quilts, which she in turn will hand out to those in need. I know what a quilt can do, not only keep you warm, but reminds me of these people who made it, cared for me in my time of turmoil and the comfort it gave me! So here is Naomi's request:

3D Dimensional Thread Tree - Sunset

Although it's small, this is a fun technique using only thread and a hand embroidery hoop in your machine!

Driving home from work in the last few months, there were evenings that the sunset was stunning and with the maple trees in the fore ground, it was just a quilt waiting to be made! So here it is! I found the perfect thread for the tree and routing through my stash I found the sunset fabric! It's amazing what you will find in your stash!

I'm sure you are asking what happened to Sue's PHD's, well, they are still waiting for me, but I'm designing with 5 of Northcott's newest lines that will be released later this year, so if you want a sneak peek, check out their site at www.northcott.net and see what's up and coming!

Well, here is #1 PHD (now a PDF) - I call it "Winter Whimsey"! This is a fun technique and depending on your fabric choice you can use any animal on your background. When I saw this fabric it reminded me of a cold winter night! The polar bears just seemed to fit naturally!

Well, I can't believe it's 2011!   One of my goals this year is to have all my Christmas gifts done by Sept. 2011!   If you are like me, we start projects and well let's say we don't quite get them completed. Of course we do finish projects, but there are some that, well, I don't know, just seems to be pushed aside, maybe because of class the we needed to get ready for, or a deadline that took priority! So when people ask what I'm working on, I tell them that I'm working on my PHD (projects half done). Sounds impressive doesn't it!

As I organize my studio for the coming year, I'm finding projects that I've started, but for some reason never finished them, good ideas that came and went.     I have projects that are cut out,  partially sewn, some that need to be quilted and ideas for new blocks that came to me at 2:00 am etc. Those that are partially pinned to the design wall......!

So look out 2011, this is the year not only to create new patterns but complete those unfinished projects. As for those orphan blocks you ask......... I will  incorporate them into a quilt, (it will definitely be scrappy) but who knows it might be a pattern one day or a class!

Christmas!

Yikes, it's 3 days before Christmas when all through our house, not a creature was stirring because we are in the quilt studio sewing like crazy! With 5 new designs off to Northcott done, and gifts for our children, just about completed and parties galore! But I must say this is my favorite time of the year and we would like to sincerely wish all of you a happy, safe and wonderful Christmas and a Healthy, happy, prosperous new year!

As you all know, I'm not a cook, but Christmas is not Christmas without baking, so I ventured into the kitchen, of course with my husband to supervise (no visit from the fire department this time!) I baked some gingerbread cookies! Morgan and I also tried to use the cookie press, which was quite a challenge! As we didn't know what we were doing and a glass of wine under our belts, you can just imagine! Fortunately, although they didn't look good, the tasted okay! A little melted chocolate on them and who would know!

Well, Scooter (shown), Tia, Herbie, Morgan and I would like to wish you all the very best of the season!

What's happening these days at Quilted Escapes!

It's been a busy time here in the studio and out of the studio. This is one our newest designs called "Garden Harvest". This was designed with Northcott's fabric line called "Natures Glow". This is fun and easy pattern to do. I will be teaching this in a class at A Great Notion in the winter session, so come out and join me.

What else has been happening, well, we had great weather for our Quilts at Tanglebank show and the people! Wow, we had visitors from all over British Columbia who joined us for the day. We would like to thank our Volunteers who made this show such a success!

I also just came back from the Quilters Connection Magazine retreat. I had the pleasure in meeting quilters from the island, as well as the mainland and the interior. We had Annemarie Ewart join on Friday night with "What's Quilting go to do with it"! What a hoot, and boy did I learn a lot!. We also had a wine and cheese party at our local quilt shop on Saturday evening. Thank you to Pam, Sonya and Judi at A Great Notion - Abbotsford for making all our guest feel welcome! If you missed your chance to join us this year, join us at our next retreat that will be in Sept. 2011! Watch for more details later this year!

Hmm...! Oh yes, I also had an opportunity to spend the day with Sue Hausmann from American Sews Creatively! She had us in stitches with her stories and I'm sure glad I didn't have to cross the border with what she had! I was surprise there was room for Herb! Thank you for a wonderful day!

This pattern uses a variety of tone on tone fabrics from Northcott - the Elements line from Mark Lipinski. This is wonderful quilt for a little girls room! Good News!

Well, as you know I haven't blogged for a while and now I can share with you what's been happening in our life! Back in April my husband wasn't feeling well and went to the Dr. They decided that they would send him for x-rays. They found that he had blockages in his heart, not much to worry about but worth watching. After a month went by, he still didn't feel well and went back to our Doctor. He had a pain in his rib, so the doctor send him for a bone scan. It was there they found a tumour in the rib. From that point on we have been in and out of hospital, with tests, and procedures. They were talking bone cancer. We were in shock as you can imagine and with the love and prayers from all our friends and family, he went into surgery on July 29. They removed the rib and sent it off for further investigation. Waiting is one of the hardest things to do, but yesterday, we received a call from the Dr to say there is no cancer and the tumour was benign! We cannot thank Dr. Sharon Ong and Dr. Larry Lim form being two of the best Dr's in the world. We would also like to thank all those at Surrey Mememorial Hosptial, who made us feel special and cared for each step of the way. I know we always here of things that always bad about our healthcare, but here is one real story to say they are great! Thank you everyone for your support, prayers and expertise in the health field. We are sincerely grateful.

Now, what's been happening here in the studio! Well, I have 3 new patterns 2 which will be release at our Quilts At Tanglebank on Sept. 11, the third pattern will be released at A Great Notion, Abbotsford Store in mid September! I'm teaching EQ6 (7) at A Great Notion in Surrey, B. C on Sept. 28 in the evening. Check on line for more classes that I will be teaching at agreatnotion.com.

I'm also desiging a new pattern for Northcott Fabrics for the spring to keep checking your local quilt shop or Northcott website!

Machine Applique - my favorite! Modern Quilt Guild

I too like bright colours and this simple machine applique table topper was fun to design and make! Great for using up your scraps too!

Wow, I was just blown away when I attended the inaugrual meeting of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild! I wasn't sure what they were all about, but with Holly at the helm everyone had a great time and the show and tell was incredible. What a wonderful inspiring group of women. I'm now looking forward to our second meeting which is July 15th. If you don't have a modern quilt guild in your area, start one up on line.

We are also gearing up the 'Quilts at Tanglebank" on Sept. 11, 2010 and "Quilters Connection Magazine retreat on Oct 1, 2 and 3, 2010. I hope I see you there!

We would like to invidte you to our 2nd Annual Quilts at Tanglebank Designers Show that will be held at Tanglebank Country Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2020 from 10 - 4.

Jon Cheryl Wall from Country Quilts, Dougal Ann Walker from the Freckles Collection, Pippa Moore from Kitambaa Designs who will be showcasing their designs in a beautiful garden setting! Meet Tricia Sherman from the "Great Canadian Shop Hop" and QNN and Heather McArthur from Quilters Connections Magazine!

However, you don't need to be a quilter to enjoy a show like this. Anyone with a home or garden will be inspired by the creative possibilities for adding beauty to their surroundings. Patterns, fabric, finished items as well as plants will be for sale. Refreshments will be available or people are welcome to bring their own to enjoy in the garden.

The show takes place from 10am to 4 pm and it is free to the public. Tanglebank Country Gardens is located at 29985 Downes Road in Abbotsford, B. C. To get there from Highway #1, take the Mt. Lehman exit (#83) just west of Abbotsford. Drive north to Downes Road and turn left. Tanglebank is a short drive west and on the your right.

Tsukeniko Inks and the Traditional Quilter

My experiment with inks, decorative thread and machine applique was almost done, but I missed something, just a little more black on the flower centre.....then all of a sudden the ink went everywhere! Yikes, I have black ink everywere on the quilt! It's on my cutting table, the floor and our little dog "Scooter"! Boy, did I run! I grabbed the quilt and the dog, ran downstairs to the deck, and thank goodness the hose was handy and I washed the quilt with cold water, not to mention the dog as well! The ink came out of the dog, but I still have a shadow effect on the border!

Hmmm.....thank goodness Scooter is black, but my border wasn't! Well, I guess this will be a teaching tool.....!

Remember, to always make sure you put the lid on........!

Tsukineko, Angelina and The Traditional Quilter

Well, I love a challenge and as a Traditional Quilter with a twist I love embellishing quilts and this wallhanging is no exception. A Great Notion challenged me to use Tsukineko Inks and Angelina in a project! Well I took on the challenge and with inks in hand and a good sense of humor, off I went! This is the outcome! Tsukineko Inks and the Traditional Quilter continued

Well as you can see, I know have had the opportunity to machine applique using rayon threads. The Tuskineko really enhances the flower. Using a dark pink fabrc, white Tuskineko on the edges, red to highlight the centre of the petals, gives the flower depth. Using the rayon threads to applique the fabric down gave it yet another dimension! Using a dry brush approach on the flower, it's not to heavy and easier to blend. Next will be quilting then maybe some beading...!

The 2010 Olympic Games have arrived!

The Games are here and I'm proud to be Canadian! In 1988 I was an employee of CTV and had the opportunity to work at the Olympics and it was one of the highlights of my life!

I, along with other Canadian Quilt designers were asked by Northcott Fabrics to design a quilt pattern using their "Winter Sports" fabric line! We are very proud to be part of this endevour and here is my design! When I heard the CTV's song sung for the first time it sent chills down my spine. This quilt was created in July of 2009, so you can imagine my feelings when I heard the "I Believe" song sung by Nikkie Yanofsky! Thank you Northcott and CTV for what you have given me!

Tsukineko Inks and a Traditional Quilter

As you know I'm a traditionalist as a quilter designer but with a twist. I'm always looking for techniques that will enhance my designs and make it fun and a learning expierence for those who purchase my patterns. I have always wanted to use Tsukineko Inks, but not being an artist I was wondering how I could you these wonderful inks to enhance my quilt designs. Well, my very dear friend and Fibre Artist Judy Greenwood (www.fibreartbyjudy.com) and I spent the afternoon playing around with the inks and she helped me use them in one of my designs. Well as you can see, a plain looking flower is has come alive with a little ink. Heat setting this with an iron will make it permanent. Along with a little beading and hand embroidery these flowers will be good enough to pick! This technique gives the traditonal quilter who loves applique to try something new, but you don't need to be an artist to do it. With a little bit of shading and highlighting on your flowers you can make you flowers come alive on your quilt. Wow what fun I had and I'm looking forward to doing more! I will also be trying this on wool as well! I will keep you posted on this wonderful journey of Tsukineko Inks and a Traditional Quilter!

It's hard to believe it's the Christmas season again and what a wonderful one we had this year having our whole family together for the first time in 9 years!

Dougal, Cheryl and I were humbled by our volunteers who put so much into making our show a success! We asked alot from them including getting up at the crack of dawn, but their enthusiasm, laughter, smiles and professionalism from each and everyone, made our show a overwhelming success! We didn't have to worry about anything, they thought on their feet and they dealt with anything that was thrown their way! We cannot thank them enough for all their hard work.

We we did it! The show is now over and we were overwhelmed with the response! We had over 400 people join us for the day! We arrived at the gardens at 6:00 am to hang the quilts!

After months of planning, our very first Quilts at Tanglebank Country Gardens is over and we were overwhelmed by the response!

A week before the show we had our volunteer meeting and they asked if what are we going to do if it R.......! We wouldn't let the say the word! We were determined to keep the "R" word from being said, because we believed the weather was going to be a glorious day! As I stood looking out the window on Wednesday watching the rain coming down in buckets, I thought to myself, it's okay this is only Wednesday, the rain will be gone by Thursday afternoon, or at least that was what the weather prediction was! They had to be right, no question! I woke up Thursday morning and the rain had stopped and the weather just got better and better! As you can see in the pictures, setting up the sun was shinning as our fabulous volunteers helped us set up!

New Additon!

Well, I was surprised yesterday, when our son brought me a new addition to our family for my birthday. She is a cute little thing and full of vim and vigour. She has a little patch on the back of her leg, so we decided to call her "Patches". Of course nothing to do with the fact that I'm a quilter.....but, now that I come to think of it! Tia and Scooter like her and Scooter thinks she great because someone if finally smaller than she is, well at least for awhile and has figured out the claws rapidly!

The Tanglebank show is approaching rapidly and there is a lot to do! So I hope to see you all at the show at Tanglebank Country Gardens on Sept. 12 from 10 - 4!

It's official Wool is the in thing from Spring Quilt Market!

Well it's official, wool is in at Spring Quilt Market! I agree that wool for applique is the best thing since apple pie. I have used wool for a couple of my patterns and there are more to come. No needle turn required, when I do flowers I just cut my shape and away I go. Wool is so versatile, either appliqued by hand or by machine, both look great, you can also use a fusible web, it doesn't matter. Hand dyed wool has a variations of colour throughout the piece which make wonderful flowers, large or small along with beading and embroidery floss you just can't beat it. It washes well on quilts, though I recommend hand washing your items. I have used it on cotton and flannel!
Don't overlook this wonderful material, it adds dimension and warmth to you quilt! Here are a couple of my patterns that use wool applique!

Stitcher's Briefcase

Most of my patterns have hand embroidery or stitchery. One of the frustations I found was carrying all my embroidery tools. As stitchers we like to rest our hands on a pillow while stitching as it brings the work closer to you. This idea came to me and here is one of our newest patterns for those who enjoy stitchery. It has a place for scissors, needles, hoop and floss. On the back of the pillow is a pocket to carry your project and the best of all it also has a handle for carrying and a 18" pillow all in one! Using wool, embroidery and beads make this a handy case a stitchers dream!

Our Guild Challenge

At our guild we were given a challenge. It was called a strip challenge and the rules were you must make 6 strips of what ever you wanted but the must measure a minimum of 8 1/2" high by 18" long! I love using wool and I wanted to use everything in my stash, you know all those wonderful bits and bobs that you keep saying to yourself "one day I will use that!" Well by gosh or by golly I did, and thought of all those buttons I had collected over the years. Although I didn't use all of them, I did learn how to sew the buttons on by machine! I love learning something new! By the time I had sewn on all those buttons the name came to me. Flowers and buttons and believe me I was tired of sewing on the buttons, so the name popped into my head, I can wait to get all those bloomin buttons on! Hence, "All those Bloom'n buttons" came to be!

Maybe one day I will make this into a pattern!
